Hand Built Originals

Making a disk shaped vase

I love pottery and gardening. Like gardening, working with clay offers an unlimited opportunity and outlet for creativity. Clay can be molded into countless forms from rustic to refined, from the simple clay pot to the finest porcelain pieces.

My vases and vessels are created to hold buds and bouquets from the garden. Each is a unique, hand built, one-of-a-kind piece.

Some of my pieces are created using the technique of mixing different colored clay bodies, a centuries old art form. It's a very time consuming technique, a true thief of time.

The clays can be coiled, rolled, stacked, sliced, stretched and rearranged to give an unlimited range of effects. My mixed clay vases are fired with a clear glaze or no glaze on the outside to emphasize the natural clay colors. The inside is glazed to hold water.

I returned to working with clay after years of gardening, photography and working in the soil. I enjoy working clay in the same way I enjoy having my hands in the dirt in the garden.

I'm a member of the Michigan Clay Artist Association, and work in my home studio north of Chelsea.
