About the Artist

My work in clay is a combination of my observations of nature and formal training. As with other pursuits in my life I find myself just "doing it" and studying it simultaneously. I enjoy working from a foundation of the known to the realm of the new and unknown, where the only limit is imagination.
Studying art at Ventura College, California in the early 1970's provided a good start, and a background in color and design. For me, education is a continuing process I use to complement current interests.
I returned to Michigan after studying in California and lived in Ann Arbor. Business became my mistress through the 80's as owner of a design/build firm. Then, a month-long sojourn touring the great gardens of Britain in 1988 captured my imagination.
In Britain I learned more about gardening in one month than in years of studying and reading. My gardening avocation became a career. The next chapter of my life was devoted to gardening and working in the field of horticulture, which I still enjoy. Photography also took center stage. I paint with plants and capture the moment in photographs.
Always seeking new things to explore, a local pottery class sparked my interest in clay art. It was a natural extension of my earlier education and work in gardening and photography. I continue to take classes and experiment with new techniques, and often incorporate natural elements from my garden in my clay pieces.
And so now, I play with mud both indoors and outdoors. I work in clay.
